Get to Know Emily

Meet Emily Harms, an insightful Master’s student in the Couple and Family Therapy Program at Antioch University, with a foundational background in Business Administration from the University of Oregon. As a student member of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, Emily is deeply committed to providing empathetic, client-centered therapy. She specializes in addressing depression, trauma, relational challenges, parenting difficulties, illness diagnosis, grief, self-exploration, and personal growth.

Emily’s therapeutic approach integrates Narrative Therapy, Attachment Theory, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), along with elements of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Solution-Focused Therapy. Her style is characterized by warmth, curiosity, and a nonjudgmental stance, creating a safe space where clients feel valued and supported. She focuses on exploring the connections between mind, body, and relationships, tailoring her methods to each individual’s or family’s unique needs.

Believing that therapy is a collaborative journey, Emily views the therapeutic process as an opportunity for self-discovery, growth, and healing. She empowers her clients to navigate life’s challenges, deepen self-awareness, and cultivate healthier connections both with themselves and others. Her goal is to help clients uncover patterns, strengthen coping skills, and nurture meaningful change, emphasizing small, intentional steps that build toward larger transformations.

As a cis-woman, mother, wife, and member of a multi-ethnic family, Emily brings a rich personal background to her practice. She is queer-affirming and also navigates her own challenges with two autoimmune diseases (lupus and RA), adding depth to her understanding and empathy. Emily is particularly drawn to working with individuals and families navigating complex relational dynamics, depression, or life transitions, as well as those healing from trauma.

Outside the therapy room, Emily enjoys spending quality time with her family, reading extensively across topics like social justice, neuroscience, and trauma, gardening, and embracing the tranquility of nature. She is also a skilled pianist, playing everything from Beethoven to Guns N' Roses, showcasing her diverse interests and talents.

Emily’s commitment to fostering a therapy environment that encourages bravery, supports overcoming challenges, and promotes liberation and healing makes her a compassionate and dynamic clinician poised to assist clients as they strive to become the brightest versions of themselves.
