Get to Know Emily

Meet Emily Emerson, a dedicated Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Associate with a rich educational background from Antioch University Seattle and Colorado State University Global. Emily specializes in providing empathetic and inclusive therapy for teens, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and individuals navigating relationship changes, with a strong focus on transgender identity and transition, queer relationships, anxiety, and depression.

Emily’s therapeutic approach is grounded in Narrative Family Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and Person-Centered Therapy. She is deeply committed to the Person-of-the-Therapist model, emphasizing authenticity and self-awareness in her practice. Emily strives to create a safe, welcoming space where clients can be their authentic selves without judgment, fostering an environment where transformative change can occur through self-reflection and personal storytelling.

As a White, AMAB transgender woman in a long-term relationship with a non-binary, asexual partner, Emily brings a personal understanding of the nuances and complexities of gender and identity. Her own experiences as a geek, gamer, Swiftie, and nerd enrich her ability to connect with clients on multiple levels, especially those exploring their gender or navigating identity-related relationship changes.

Emily is passionate about supporting and validating her clients in their journeys toward authenticity, drawing joy from helping others embrace their true selves. Her favorite quote by Michael White, “The person is not the problem, the problem is the problem,” encapsulates her philosophy towards therapeutic challenges.

Outside of therapy, Emily enjoys engaging with her hobbies, including caring for her two cats, Miqo'te and Mellie, maintaining her sole surviving houseplant named Steve, and indulging in various geek cultures like trading card games, building Gundam model kits, and listening to D&D podcasts. She's an avid video gamer, with a particular fondness for JRPGs and MMORPGs.

Emily’s professional contributions include speaking engagements at the International Family Therapy Association World Congress in Toyama, Japan, and her role as a nominee for WAMFT Student Associate of the Year in 2024. Her work on parasocial relationships and the use of her identity to connect with clients has been recognized in presentations and publications within the therapeutic community.

With her combination of professional expertise, personal authenticity, and a commitment to fostering an inclusive therapy environment, Emily Emerson is an invaluable resource for those seeking support in understanding and embracing their identities.
