Art Therapy

When we are lost for words, art creates a path. Art Therapy is a mental health modality, practiced in a clinical setting with a licensed art therapist that integrates creativity as a tool in the therapeutic process.  Unlike conventional talk-therapy alone, art therapy can access the sensory and emotional parts of a person’s experiences that are not as accessible through verbal expression. Therapeutic art-making can be used to build self-esteem, assist in emotional regulation and coping skills, help recognize implicit resilience and strengths, help to explore symbolism and meaning-making, and improve cognitive flexibility.

Who is Art Therapy for?

Art therapy is wonderful for all ages and for folx with a wide range of goals in individual or relational therapy. When used with families and intimate relationships it can provide insight into another’s experiences and perspectives, open the door to difficult discussions, reduce conflict, and build collaboration and connection. 

FAQs

Do I need to be good at art do to Art Therapy?

All experience levels are welcome! Art therapy is widely accessible, inclusive, and no art experience is necessary. Art expression is not used to pathologize, nor is it focused on an outcome, and instead used to explore, play and experiment.
 

Is art-making a part of each session? 

Physical art-making is used to support the therapeutic process. For some client’s it is used regularly and for others more sporadically or rarely.
 

What if i don't like art or don’t want to participate? 

Any art as a part of therapy is an invitation, never required.
 

Do I need my own art materials? 

Art materials are offered in in-person settings. For those who are telehealth, the art therapist can work with what you have available at home. 

 

I have a disability; will art therapy work for me? 

Check in with your art therapist to discuss how they can make art-making more accessible to you.

How does Art Therapy work?

Art expression is not used to pathologize, nor is it focused on an outcome, and instead used to explore, play and experiment. Art therapy centers the client and helps to facilitate the process of change and growth.

Art experientials can help process challenging emotional experiences using a variety of components including kinesthetic movements, sensuality, perception and metaphors. Through art mediums, clients can tangibly interact with concrete materials while reflecting on narratives, imaginations and  work with whatever rises from the unconscious mind.

Creative arts expression in a therapeutic setting can aid in the integration of cognitive, relational and behavioral shifts to maintain positive change. 

As humans, we all need a space to be completely seen, valued and respected. Individually or in a group, creating art fosters connections. Art directives infuse imaginative possibilities with techniques like reframing, pattern recognition, rituals and metaphors that support growth. The creative process is the bridge between the client’s subjective inner world and their objective reality and as art therapists, the therapists facilitate the client’s journey towards wellness with compassion and empathy.

Can I use insurance to pay for art therapy?
 

Most of the time, you can! While all insurance plans are a little different, most of our clients who opt in for working with an art therapist have been successful in submitting their claims for sessions to their insurance companies.

 

Art therapy is an approach to therapy that our practice happily bills for similar to billing for other types of therapy that we offer!
