Get to Know Alvin
Meet Alvin Yip, a dedicated MFT Intern who brings a wealth of experience and a deep passion for helping others to his practice. Alvin has a background in Applied Behavioral Science from Seattle Central College, and his training includes Motivational Interviewing, attendance at the Children for Justice Conference, and SpearCare Training for staff safety during high-stress situations.

Alvin works primarily with BIPOC individuals, couples, and families, focusing on a wide range of issues such as grief and loss, anxiety, relationships, self-confidence, intergenerational trauma, and self-empowerment. His therapy sessions also resonate deeply with first-generation college students and immigrant families, leveraging his understanding and empathy to address their unique challenges.

In his therapeutic approach, Alvin combines various methodologies including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Experiential Therapy, and more. He emphasizes a systemic, culturally sensitive, trauma-informed, collaborative, and person-centered approach to therapy. Alvin believes that real change begins with building a strong rapport and trust, which fosters open, vulnerable interactions that lay the groundwork for effective therapy.

Identifying as an Asian-American cisgender heterosexual male, Alvin brings his personal experiences and cultural understanding into his practice, enriching the therapeutic relationship. He is particularly enthusiastic about working with clients who are passionate about personal growth and improving their relationships with others, including family and friends.

Alvin’s personal mantra, "The comfort zone is a great place to be, but nothing grows there," reflects his belief in challenging oneself to foster personal development. Outside the therapy room, Alvin enjoys lifting weights, playing volleyball, taking nature walks, listening to music, and singing. His recent exploration into the world of essential oils, with a particular fondness for pine needle and eucalyptus, shows his appreciation for the small joys in life.

Fluent in English and Cantonese, Alvin’s linguistic skills enable him to connect with a diverse client base. His volunteer work at the Asian Counseling Referral Service, Operation Sack Lunch, and The Children's Justice Conference highlights his commitment to community service and advocacy, further demonstrating his dedication to making a positive impact both in and out of therapy sessions.

Alvin Yip is not only a therapist but a community-oriented individual who integrates his professional skills with personal passions to provide holistic, impactful support to his clients.
